How to Prepare Your Roof for the Winter

As fall is quickly approaching and winter is soon approaching, you’ll want to check a few things regarding your roof. The last thing you want during the cold months is any issues with your roof. Your roof is the first line of defense against the harsh elements, so make sure it’s prepped and ready for the coming months.

Check the Attic

Taking a look at your attic, you’ll want to look out for a few things.

The first place where any leaks or cracks in your roof can be noticed from the interior is the attic. You can look for moisture damage and leaks in the wall, but you should hire a professional who knows what to look for.

Small animals can get into your home through cracks in the roof. As the weather gets colder, wild animals seek warmth and shelter, if there is a crack in your roof, they’ll take the opportunity to invade and make your home theirs. Your roof may be missing shingles or have damage, so calling a professional to inspect is the way to go.

Proper ventilation in your attic can reduce snow and ice build-up on your roof and allow the air to flow freely through it. Proper ventilation can also save you energy and money by keeping your attic at the right temperature.

Address All Leaks and Repairs

As soon as you notice any damage, it should quickly be addressed. You’ll want an experienced roofer to look at anything that needs fixing. The best time to address these issues is now. You’ll want to repair anything damaged before the winter months to prevent further damage to your roof and house.

Clean your gutters

The gutters on your home protect it from water damage. Gutters keep water flowing away from the foundation and siding of your home. In the coming cold months, if your gutters are clogged, the flowing water may freeze. If they accumulate too much water and snow, your gutters may get damaged. Cleaning your gutters will prevent this. Another great way to avoid all of this is installing leaf guards in your home. In our previous blog, we talked about leaf guards and all their benefits.

Inspect your roof

Looking at your roof directly is another great way to see if there are any missing shingles, damage that you need to address, or any debris that you might have to clean off. Cleaning debris off protects your roof by preventing buildup that can lead to damage. Repairing missing shingles and any damage your roof has now will have you in the long run. Now is the best time to call an expert and prepare!
